Today is International Mandela Day, in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated on his birthday on the 18th of July. The day was officially declared by the United Nations in 2009.
The Mandela Day campaign message is:
"Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We`re asking you to start with 67 minutes.
We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace and reconcilliation."
Mandela said at the time of the campaign`s launch that he would be " honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight pverty and promote peace and reconcilliation."
The day aims to serve as a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better.
All around the world and especially in South Africa, we all try and do our little bit for those who could do with some help. Some visit the old, the sick, the poor and the hungry. Others visit animal shelters, organise park clean ups, donate blood or empty out cuboards.
Whatever, you do, its always a good feeling, and so we are grateful today that Mandela inspired us to come together as communities, give a little back, make people smile and remind us to do these things more often, not only today.
In the cold and wet Cape, a group of moms and kids made pots of soups and sandwiches and headed out to Capricorn Park.
Residents arrived from all corners, grateful for something warm and healthy at the end of their day. Children from different worlds connected and shared. A beautiful rainbow lit up the sky. Hearts and tummys were left full and as we drove away we noticed the number on the house..67.
We have a given a little, but we all got alot more back!
Thank you Mandela..always in our hearts.
